Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Affairs

RETAILERS AND HOLIDAYS (•Special to “Times”) HASTINGS, Feb. 5. a meeting or tne executive committee of the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held at tho Tomoanaf Showgrounds this morning, tho president, Mr J. H. Absolom, presiding. On. the motion of Mr J. H. Mac Niven it was decided that the profits from the society’s farm should be devoted to a sinking fund to pay off the indebtedness on the Waikoko property. “Wo are spending money on improvements, but wo are making no provision for the mortgage on the property,’* Mr Mao Niven pointed out in making his proposal. A letter was received from Mr W B. White, Takapau, stating) that he had had a portrait painted of his Royal champion bull Terrace Ahua Pal and that, a 3 he had been exhibiting at the society’s shows for a number of years and had always received the very best treatment he would be pleased if tho society would accept the painting to hang in the office on the showgrounds. “I wish more breeders would do tho same,” said the chairman in mov ing that tho offer should be accepted and that the secretary express the society’s thanks to Mr White. “We want to get portraits of the animals.” Mr Absolom also mentioned that photos of past presidents and other people connected with the society were also wanted. The secretary of the Napier Retailers’ Association wrote advising that the Napier retailers had resolved to observe tho Anniversary statutory holiday on People’s Day of the Spring Show, and that, in making this decision his executive had instructed him to state that it was largely influenced by its desira to assist the society. “This is not only a good thing for the society, but it also brings town and country togethor,” remarked Mr Absolom in moving that tho society should express its thanks to the NaNapier Retailers’ Association. Mr A. M. Robertson proposed that the Hastings Retailers’ Association should be approached to eeo whether it could fall into line with Napier, the motion being carried. It was decided to write thanking Mr D. J. Holden for the donation of a cup for the New Zealand chamiiiouship chop in the axemen’s ,events and Mr C. H. Bunker for the donation of a cup in the dog section. The appointment of Messrs J. HLange and D. T. Sinclair, Napier ea judges in the sporting and other breeds sections respectively in the dog classes at the Autumn Show were approved. Messrs G. N. Bell, Harare, and D. Anderson, Carterton were approved for the poultry classes. Accounts totalling £9B 17/11 were passed for payment.
