Women’s Organisations Resume Activities
Y.W.C.A. BOARD OF DIRECTORS. The monthly meeting of tho Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors was held yesterday at the clubrooms, George street, when there were present Mes* dames G. G. Priest (in tho chair), E. C. Barnett, W. J. Phillips, D. Evans, K. Dean, W. G. Major, P. Flood, T. B. Lees, W. 11. Rainforth and E. D. Knight. Correspondence was read as under: — Airs. H. Sinclair’s resignation was received and accepted with regret. The death of the Honourable Airs. Montague Waldegrave, for many year's president of tho world’s Y.W.C.A., was reported. Tho minute of appreciation passed by tho world’s executive committee was read. Reports of activities included details of end of year functions, sports day, picnics, services, parties, visit to Old People’s Home, collecting for Christmas hampers, etc. Eight applications for board had been attended to since tho December meeting of the board. During the last week four girls had applied for work and had been placed in suitable positions. The finance statement and accounts for payment wore passed. It was decided to hold the annual street day on February 26, and to have a street stall also on that date. Board members were asked to get promises of cake, flowers and produce to stock the stall. A shop will be opened in Main street on February 18 where cakes and handwork will be sold. An open cooking competition for school girls and for adults would bo held during that week, February 18-20. No entry fee would be charged and good prizes were donated for this enterprise. Mrs. W. J. Phillips was appointed judge of tho cake competitions. It was agreed not to enter shops on street collecting day. It' was decided to move the wall of one of tho club rooms to give extra space in the front room. FIRST MEETING OF GIRL GUIDES' ASSOCIATION. Tho first meeting of the year of the Palmerston North Girl Guides’ Association was held in All Saints’ schoolroom, Mrs. G. A. Eliott (District Commissioner) presiding. Also present were; Mesdaines T. Findlay Wilson, W. F. Field, J. W. Body, A. E. Holmes, L E. Brougham, A. Stewart, C. Jensen, Misses 0. War burton, M. Grant and M. Warren (hon. secretary). Tho resignations of Miss Phyllis Nicholls as captain of St. Paul’s company, on account of her removal from the district, and of Aliss Eva Quarrie as captain of the First Company, Shannon, in view of her approaching marriage, were accepted with deep regret, predation of tho services of these Guidcrs being placed on record. It was pointed out that Miss Nicholls was one of the original Guides in tho Palmerston North Association and had been actively interested ever since, having gained the high honour of the gold cord. The executive decided to rorward a small gift to Miss Nicholls in appreciation of her long and faithful service. In view of the restrictions prevailing and tho fact that schools were not reopening until March it was resolved to abandon tho annual swimming sports arranged for February 20. Arrangements for the competitions to be held in April were discussed, tho Commissioner to approach Mrs. M. Tweed (Provincial Commissioner) with regard to an examiner. Notification was received from tho Provincial Commissioner that the Coronation message would probabiy pass through Wellington by the following route:—Wellington, Shannon, Foxton, Palmerston North, Feilding, Alarton, Alangaweka, Taihape and Wanganui, thence into Taranaki. It will then be received back again probably at Woodville and will 'proceed through the Wairarapa and Ilutt Valley to Wellington. —lt was resolved to invite representatives from the companies in tho Palmerston North area to attend tho Alarch meeting in order to make preliminary plans as to the route and means of carrying the message.
