Canterbury Jockey Club

YIELDS AND PROSPECTS TOR TO-DAY. WIN AND PLACE BETTING. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s one day meeting will be held to-day at Riccarton. With good quality fields engaged and several horses engaged at Wingatui next week, the racing will be full of interest to punters. The Midsummer Handicap, the principal race on the day’s programme has attracted one of the strongest fields that will have contested the race in recent years. The topweight Argentic, in his present form, must be given a good chance as he demonstrated at Trentham that he can carry weight. Queen of Song and Davalo disappointed at Trentham and on recent performances should not be fancied. Wild Chase undefeated in three races at the N.Z. Cup meeting has not raced since then, but reports from Riccarton state that he has been galloping well. Tunneller and Manetho are two who may surprise. The favour* ites may be:— Wild Chase and Argentic. There will be solid support for Concertpitch in the Craven Plate after his second placing at Trentham, and seven furlongs appears to suit him. Most opposition may come from Top Notch and Knockfin, while Joyous is not without prospects among the lightweights. Royal Chief will carry the support of many punters in the Middle Park Plate after his defeat of Francis Drake in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Ho is the outstanding youngster of iuj ago in the south engaged on Saturday. Paper Slipper does not look capable of conceding so much weight to Royal Chief, but he should be a good place prospect. As this is Lazybones first race over six furlongs he will have more time to settle down as his slowness away from the barrier has hampered his chances in the five furlong races he has contested. When tho machine closes most money may be for:— Royal Chief, Paper Slipper, and Lazybones. Horses likely to be fancied in the minor races are:— Hornby Brush Hurdles.—Santoft and Golden Lap. Trial Stakes.—Night Bound, Gresham, and Vola Dale. Halswell Handicap.—Cerene Abbas Willie Win, and Sovereign Lady. Lyttelton Plato.—Haughty Winner, Garonne and Top Row. Post Handicap.—Roaming, Rose of Tralee, La France. FROM VARIOUS SOURCES Plato has been sold by Mr T. H. Lowry to a Taranaki sportsman and will be trained in future by J. Duggan at Woodville. Sir Charles Clifford has sold the four-year-old Bun Fight to Mr McGill, of Featherston. She has arrived at Awapuni and will be trained by P. E. Hazelman.
