Dangerous Corners

While the Minister of Transport vigorously pursues his road safety campaign with considerable success in many directions, one prolific source of danger appears for the present to have been overlooked. Fences, hedges, trees, and even buildings, are permitted to obscure tlic approach of traffic at corners of city streets and country highways. At certain street intersections in Palmerston North the position is positively dangerous. Hedges are allowed to grow apparently unchecked in some cases and in others trees which could be removed without disfiguring gardens obscure the motorist’s view. In a city where there are so many right-angle corners and intersections such a state of affairs should not be allowed to exist, and once attention is called to the dangers lurking at such corners we are sure no time will be lost by residents in removing them. Quite a large number of corners on country highways are also made doubly dangerous by overgrown hedges. It would be a great pity if the Transport Minister’s commendable efforts to reduce the dangers of motoring are nullified by failure to remove needless obstructions, and local bodies generally would be doing a service to users of highways by making a comprehensive inspection of all comers and intersections.
