From Our (i uu Curretfpou.TctU. Despite the extra duties of the haymaking season, the members of the Apiti Women's institute found time to attend the February meeting which was held in Mrs. W. McKay s garden on Tuesday afternoon. There were over 30 present and everyone enjoyed meeting in such pleasant surroundings on such a lovely summer day. Mrs. C. M. Stanley presided and read apologies from two absent committee members, Mesdames W. M. Duncan and Geo. Watkins. Mrs. Eric Schmidt was welcomed as a new member and a visiting member from Rata W 1 Mrs. Downe, was also given a cord’ial welcome. Members were pleased indeed to know that Miss Jerome Spencer was included in tne New Year’s honours list, and a letter of congratulation is to be sent to her. Members were given the opportunity of sampling the birthday c&ke sent from Send in Surrey. The demonstration on smocking given by three ° f i h f., younger n,e,,,b «rs, Mrs. J. Cawood and Misses M. Pettigrew and Madge McKay, was followed with interest and many brought materials and commenced work under the guidance of the demonstrators. Mrs. Prince was In charge of
the market stall and the competition tables were arranged in the dining room. The prizes were awarded as follow: Plain iioones. Miss Strahan 1 and 3, Mrs. A. W Benuemaa 2; laundered tablecloth, Miss Strahan 1, Mrs. Tom Osborne 2. The entries in the dahlia classes were affected by the recent heavy rain and wind. However, although not large in numbers, the entries presented for judging provided a very attractive display. Results: Decora tive bowl of dahlias. Miss Strahan 1, Mrs. H. H. Jensen 2; cactus dahlia, Mrs. H. H. Jensen 1; collection of six dahlias, Mrs. H. Jensen l f Miss Strahan 2, Mrs. J. Cawood 3. Mrs. Benseman w;;s the competitions steward. A whistling competition caused much laughter, the prize being won by Mrs. ITince, while the member who acted as siffleur must be congratulated, too. The aster competition is to bo arranged by the committee later in the month. Mrs. R. Churcher has kindly taken charge of the "rag bag" collection. Mesdames J. Mapson, J. O’Hagan and Tom Osborne were the afternoon tea hostesses. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to Mrs. McKay and her daughters for the use of their home and garden. The local branch of the National party held a meeting on Tuesday evening. Mr. W. McKay presided over a small attendance of supporters when matters of inter-, est were discussed. . The ewe fair is to be held on Tuesday!
i next when sales are to be held in both saleyards at Apiti. i Mrs. Downe, of Rata, is at present the guest of Mrs. Humphries. ; Numbers of Apiti residents attended . the Feilding Show this week.
