During the course of his morning’s round, a Nelson milkman had occasion to serve an overseas vessel then in port. He was agreeably surprised when a seaman came off the ship and ordered a gallon of milk, and to the astonishment of the vendor, proceeded to quench his thrist by drinking exactly half the quantity. Tho remainder ho took on board for a future occasion. The fact that for weeks at sea only condensed milk is available was probably responsible for this action, though usually it is not the custom for thirsty seamen to condescend to the humble milkman f-or their refreshment.
