Wairoa Races

TO-DAY’S FORM HORSES.

In common with tho majority of clubs during the present season, the Wairoa Racing Club has received splendid response from owners for the annual meeting this week, tho fields for the opening day to-morrow are among the best in number and quality that have ever raced on the Te Kuponga racecourse. The betting will be under tho single-pool system. The following horses are likely to bo fancied for their engagements:— Trial Handicap: Taupiri and Sunny Blonde. District Hack Handicap: Ruinctte and Mahala. Wairoa Cup: Legatee and Hunting Mars. The Kupenga Hack Handicap: Small Boy aud Gay Hunter. Maiden Scurry: Hunting Spy and Jay Bird. Ormond Handicap: De Friend and Fossiker. Rauwa Hack Handicap: Huntctte and Bly Gain. THE ACCEPTANCES.

KICCARTON NOTES. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 3. A denso fog made conditions unpleasant for early work at Riccarton this morning, but with the horses doing only easy tasks there was a minimum of inconvenience. The fog lifted gradually and the sun shone brightly after breakfast. Polydora was sent twice over two schooling brush hurdles, giving a good display. Several trainers sent young horses away from the five furlongs barrier for education, some being allowed to run down the straight at a strong pace. Mr W. E. Hazlett arrived last night from Invercargill with Golden Lap and Blazon. The former will probably jurhp brush hurdles to-morrow in view of Saturday’s engagement and Blazon will be given a run over steeplechase fences, as he is to compete in the autumn, crosscountry 'events in Southland. Some other visiting horses aro duo to arrive to-night. INCREASED C.J.C. STAKES. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 2. The . Canterbury Jockey Club announces another very substantial increase in stakes for the autumn meeting in Easter week. The amounts of all sixteen races on the programme have been advanced. No race is worth less than £250, and the good average of just under £4OO a race is the best for many years at this meeting. The total offering is £6375, an increase of £IBSO. Both the Great EastOr' and Great Autumn Handicaps have been raised from £6OO to £BOO. An interesting event on the first day’s programme is the Autumn Champion Plate for hacks. This will take the place of the Autumn Plate, and the stako has been increased from £2OO to £425, which will include silver plate, value of £25. The distance has been reduced from a mile and a quarter to one mile. BIG STALLION PRICES NORDENFELDT ON TOP With Beau Pere’s price oit 3300 guineas still a topic of discussion, the appended list of prices paid for notable stallions sold by auction in New Zealand is of interest:— Gns. Nordenfeldt, by Musket—Onyx. (bred in New Zealand) .. 5600 Kilbroney, by The Wag—-Innis- , makil (bred in New Zealand) 4000 Multiform, by Hotchkiss—Formo (bred in New Zealand) .. 3750 Archery, by Tracery—Port Sun light (bred in England) .. 4500 Beau Pere, by Son-in-Law— Cinna (bred in England) .. 3300 Charlemagne 11., by St. Simon— Perfect Dream (bred in England) .... .. .... .. 2300

4 FROM VARIOUS SOURCES It is reported from Southland that H. E. Gray has inquired concerning accommodation for several horses at Riverton for the Easter meeting. V <s> «$> <s> $> A recent arrival from Sydney at Riccarton is the light-weight apprentice jockey, E. Jones, who was articled to P. Riddle, but has been transferred to C. J. McGregor. As Jones can ride at 7.0 he will be a welcome addition to the ranks of Southern horsemen. <S> <s> <s> «!> A few days after her sale at the Westmere Stud dispersal the brood marc Comedy Queen lost her colt foal by Beau Pere. The colt broke a leg while playing about and had to be destroyed. The unlucky new owner is Mr C. H. J. Schmidt, New South Wales, who paid 325 guineas at the sale for Comedy Queen and the foal, the first lot to be offered. @> ® The defection of Dragon Moth from her engagements at the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting at Ellerslie last week was due to the fact that she gave one of her legs a knock on a fence and when the limb filled it was decided to withdraw her. The trouble is not serious and she will probably race again shortly. Dragon Moth showed herself to be a smart filly when she won at her first start at the Auckland summer meeting and should be worth keeping in mind, states a Northern writer.
