Woman Tunesmith Composes For “Champagne Waltz”
MACMURRAY AND BWARTHOUT FINE ROMANTIC TEAM ' (State: Screening 10.30 p.m. Friday.) To be a successful song writer, strive for something definitely new and unusual in each number. That is the rule that dainty Ann Ronnell, ace of America’s feminine song writers, set for herself when she embarked upon a musical career. Its success is shown by the fact that she has written a hit a year since joining the cohorts of Tin Pan Alley. Among them are “Willow Weep FOr Ale,” “Baby’s Birthday Party,” "Big Bad Wolf,” and several others. She introduced for the first time what is known in musical parlance as “double time”; in the second, the baby theme made its debut and the third stands out because of the Mother Goose theme. Ann is currently occupied with a “Merry-(A>-Round Waltz” which the dance team of Veloz and Lolanda will present for the first time in Paramount’s “Champagne Waltz,” starring Glady Swarthout and Fred Mac Murray. To its quiant, catchy strains the dancers will execute the motions of a merry-go-round. The story of "Champagne Waltz” is set in Vienna, where Fred MacMurray, a leader of an American swing band introduces this type of music into Vienna, thus replacing the old Strauss waltz, and bringing unhappiness to Gladys Swarthout and her grandfather, who leads a waltz orchestra. Alan Marshal, Broadway stage star, has been placed under long-term con- * tract by David O. Selznick, following hie successful screen debut in “The Garden of Allah.’'
