Five Years for A Tempestuous Lover

WBOTB TO GIRL ON CARTRIDGES Love messages on cartridges found in his possession were described at Leeds Assizes when Arnold Swallow, aged 32, of Swinton, was sentenced to five years’ penal servitude for attempting to murder his former sweetheart. Counsel described him as a “tempestuous lover.” When he was arrested after wounding Marion Prosser, of Toll Bar road, Swinton, it was stated, six cartridges were found in his pocket. On one was written, “With love, Arnold,’’ two crosses to indicate kisses, and the words, “Till death.’’ On another was: “This is for M. P.,” which counsel suggested meant Marion Prosser. Miss Prosser had refused to marry Swallow. She was frightened by his violence and they quarrelled. Swallow visited her at her home and asked her to shake hands and part good friends. When she held out her hand he pulled her to him and cut her throat with a penknife. According to a scientist the Garden of Eden spread over the Sahara, the deserts of Arabia and part of Mongolia. No wonder Adam gave it up. He was probably asked to weed the garden. A retired admiral protests that if they could see the amount of tea drunk in the navy to-day, Nelson and Drake would turn in their graves. He seems to have forgotten for the moment that Drake is in his hammock
