Was Shakespeare Bacon’s Pen-name ?
SUGGESTED SOLUTION United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, Feb. 1. The eternal Bacon-Shakespcare con troversy has been revived by the Bacot Society's approach to tlie Dean oi Westminster for permission to open Spenser’s tomb in the Abbey, with tht idea of examining tho elegy bj Shakespeare, as well as those of other major poets, and cast into the grave, so that the handwriting can be compared with that of Bacon. This, it is suggested, will settle whether “Shakespeare” w T as merely • pen-name used by Bacon. Tho idea that Francis Bacon wrote the plays ascribed to William Shakespears dates from 1850. It is based on parallelism# between the writings of the two men and the assumed illiteracy of Shakespeare. Bacon died in April, 1626, and Shakespeare’# death ia given as April t 1016.
