Spin Bowlers Tie England Down
Only 42 Ahead on First Innings AUSTRALIA’S HOPES REVIVE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Monday, 11.35 p.m. ADELAIDE, Feb. 1. There was cool weather and brilliant sunshine for the resumption of the Test. The wicket was still good. England resumed their first innings in a good position. Barnett needed only eight to register his first century in a Test but it took him forty minutes to get the runs. The magnificent bowling of Fleet-wood-Smith and O'Reilly bottled the batsmen up. Lcyland was going full of fire when ho touched one from Fleetwood-Smith and Chipperfi, old took a good catch. The crowd was a disappointing one for a holiday. Only 25,000 saw the resumption of play and there was not an appreciable increase during the prolunch session. The crowd was almost in, a mind to accept a huge score from England and went mad with excitement at L'eyland’s dismissal. Then Wyatt fell to O'Reilly's leg trap, Fingleton taking a neat catch at silly leg. The bowler was unlucky not to get Ames the same way in the same over. Fingleton anticipated a flier from the bat but dived the wrong way. Barnett took 266 minutes to reach his century. His runs included eight fours and one six. He was very slow to-day, scoring only eleven runs in the first hour and only three in the half hour after reaching his century. Bradman waited until 217 were on the board before calling on the new ball. Then McCormick bowled the most expensive over so far for the game, 17 being scored from eight balls, including four fours to Barnett. The scoring rate took a great leap with tho pace bowlers operating. McCormick was not bowling nearly so fast as on Saturday although he had a fresh south-westerly breeze behind him. The Ames-Bamett partnership realised 50 in 75 minutes, the batsmon fighting their way back to the top and just before lunch 50 took only 39 minutes. O’Reilly at one stage before lunch bowled six overs for four maidens, five runs and one wicket. The afternoon session saw Australia's great purple patch. It seemed that when Barnett and Ames resumed after lunch England was set for a big tally, but an inspired burst of bowling by McCormick started the collapse and saw England all out by tea. Ames started the rot by attempting a leg glance off a fast ball. He missed and tho ball took his leg stump. Then a brilliant catch by McCormick got rid of Hardstaff. The late English batsmen could do nothing against the fine spin bowling of Fleetwood-Smith and O'Reilly. Both bowlers gave nothing away and forced the batsmen to play every ball. Barnett was tied up by Fleetwood-Smith, and he was hitting out in desperation when he was dismissed. With England only 42 runs in front on the first innings tho game is in a i very open position and it is evident that Australia’s aim is to put up a reasonable score for England may have to fight for runs in the fourth innings. The wicket played well to-day but the chances are that it will begin to give the bowlers great help late to-morrow or Wednesday. Australia opened badly. Fingleton and Brown took not the slightest risk but Hammond trapped Fingleton leg before. Bradman reverted to his usual batting position first wickot down and began in the real Bradman style. He scored off every ball he received in the first three overs but then had to be con tent to play few balls, Brown dominating the strike. The attendance was 29,C00 and the takings £3203. ENGLAND.
