Useful Silkworms

REFORM OF CRIMINALS IN ~ PUNJAB LONDON, Jan. 2. How tho introduction of silkworms cleaned up a criminal district in the Punjab and led to the reformation of wrongdoers, was told by LieutenantCommissioner Alfred H. Barnett, until recently Territorial Commander of the Salvation Army for the Bombay Presidency, in a paper read before the Indian Section of the Royal Society of Arts in London. Commissioner Barnett said that the Government decided to use criminal labour in a forest of mulberry trees at Changa Manga, a place which took its narno from two desperate outlaw brothers who lived there. By way of demonstrating to the people that silkworm rearing might be made a useful adjunct to their ordinary occupation, lOOoz. of silkworm eggs were obtained from France, and 8,000,000 silkworms were hatched. A small army of men and boys was required to look after tho worms, and a great harvest of silk was gathered in. "By a strange turn of fortune, tho very forest which had been a harbouring place for criminals became under Salvation Army supervision, a place for the reformation of criminals,’’ said Commissioner Barnett.
