Additional Subsidy For Garrison Band

PARTICIPATION IN NELSON CONTEST. Seeking an additional subsidy ot £7 b f making £2SU in all, a deputation from the Palmerston North Garrison Band waited on the City Council last night. Speaking on behalf of the band, Air J. A. Nasn said that every effort was made to raise funds, but with tho expenditure that it had to meet, it could not keep ahead of its liabilities. The band desired to compete in tho contest at Nelson this month, taking part m the A grade division, but it needed funds for the purpose. If the band were successful tnere, it had hopes that it would be able to go to Australia to compete m a military oand contest. After Mr W. H. Brown had drawn attention to what the baud had done over a long period of years, and to the services rendered by its members, the Alayor said the council realised that a baud was a very necessary adjunct in the life of the city, but tnere were three bauds here now. The council would like to see both the Garrison and City bands go to the contest. On tho retirement of the deputation, Cr. Tremaine said that, unless both bands w-eut to the contest, there was no chance of getting the contest here in 1938. Un the motion of Cr. YV. B. Cameron, seconded by Cr. W. B. Tenuent, it was decided to grant the extra £75 asked.
