Regrading of the Public Service

PREPARATORY WORK BEGUI* Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 30. Preparatory to a regrading of tbn Public Service, inspector* are at present interviewing officer* of tbe vari4 ous Government departments. The regrading is carried out by the Public Service Commissioners, and it should be done according to the regulations ai intervale of not more than five <ears. The revision of tbe grading »jst should have been carried out in 1934, but it was postponed under section 27 of the Finanoe Act, 1933. Tho regrading being eagerly awaited by many officers, and generally it is favoured by the public servants. By its provisions departmental heads first make report* on their staffs, officers having the right to inspect their report and to enter an appeal from their regrading if they do not consider it fair. The commissioners’ inspectors then visit each of tho centres in turn and carry out lurcher investigations. Later again U*»» Public Service Commissioners, Messrs T. Mark and J. H. Boyes, will visit the centres and any officer who ao wishes may wait upon them to make any suggestions or complaints. Tho work is considerably complicated on this occasion because of tbe extension of the departments and the changes made by the recent industrial legislation. The staff of the former Mortgage Corporation are now *£»iii public servant*, and so too *ro tl staffs of the National Broad a sting Service, aud th© newly-formed Primary Product* Marketing Depaitimut. There are some departments, including the railways, which are out of the con* trol of the commissioner*, and there are also a number of temporary men whose positions have not yet been nettled. It it stated, however, that the number of officer* in the various departments under the control of the excluding administrative officers, native school teachers and officers on extended leave or on loan to other departments, totals 7869.
