McGrath Beats Bromwich in Australian Tennis Singles

Tho Australian tennis championships resulted: — Men’s singles championship final: V. AlcGrath defeated W. Bromwich G—3, I—6, 6—o, 2—6, 6—l. Women’s singles sc. li-final: Aliss N. Wynne (Victoria) de/eated Aliss T. Coyne (New South Wales) 7—5, 4—6, 6—4. Women’s doubles final: Misses Coyne and N. Wynne defeated Airs. Westacott (Queensland) and Mrs. Hopman (Victoria) 6—2, 6 —2. Boys’ junior doubles final: Bromwich and D. Pails defeated 11. Lindo and J. Gilchrist G—4, 5—7, G—4. In a Davis Cup exhibition match Quist and Schwartz versus A. Huxley and D. Turnbull, play was abandoned when the score was 4 —6, 6 —3, 10— 10. The AlcGrath-Bromwich match was generally conceded to be up to Davis Cup standard. AlcGrath was in rare form. Ho seldom missed a smash and so placed it as to be quite impossible of return. Bromwich won two sets almost as he liked but AlcGrath dominated the other three.

Semi-finals. Brown and Alayson beat Coombc and Charters (Wellington) 7 —5, 6 —2, 7—5. Ladies’ Doubles. Semi-finals. Airs. Melody and Aliss Nicholls (Wellington) beat Alisscs Bishop and Grenier 6—l, 7—5. Alisses N. and AI. Beverley beat Misses MacFarlane and Taylor G — 2. 5 10, B—6. Final. Alisscs Beverley beat Mrs. Alelody and Aliss Nicholls 6 —2, 6—3. Mixed Doubles. Semi-finals. Sturt and Aliss AlacFarlane beat Charters and Aliss Taylor 5 —7, 6—2, 6 2. Coombc and Aliss Nicholls beat Gunfi and Miss Alargaret Beverley 6—l, 7—5. Final. Coombc and Aliss Nicholls beat Sturt and Miss AlacFarlane 6—3, 6—l. Aliss Alargaret Beverley also won the Intermediate girls’ singles and inter mediate mixed doubles partnered with Gunn.
