Pedestrians Want Speed Control on all Automobiles
LONDON—A demand for the compulsory fitting of motor vehicles with a device to make it mechanically impossible to exceed a general speed limit has been made to Mr. Leslie Hore-Belisha, Minister of Transport, by a committee of the Pedestrians’ Association, here. The association in taking this action points out that it has been “influenced by the collapse of the existing machinery to secure the voluntary observance of speed limits. The contempt for speed limits shown by many motorists, which has been encouraged by the attitude adopted by somo Benches of Magistrates toward speeding offenses, has increased the dangers to foot passengers and in many places turned uncontrolled crossing places into death traps. “There are several devices," according to the association, “which limit the speed of a vehicle to a given maximum and yet do not destroy a reserve of engine power in negotiating hills.
