GAME OF BOWLS
BRITISHERS IN S. AFRICA GREENS ARE FOUND TOO KEEN South Africa, being so much closer to Europe than Australia or New Zealand, is more frequently visited by sporting teams —athletes, footballers, lawn tennis men ahd women, and swimmers, from other countries. At present a team of British bowlers is testing the calibre of the South Africans, who are responding well *.o it. A commentator in the Sunday Tribune, of Durban, a month back, touched interestingly on the experiences of the British players:— “So far as one can judge from their progress to date, the greens in South Africa are rather too keen for the British bowlers touring this country. They won none of their matches against the Kimberley and Griqualand West represen natives, their best performance there being a defeat by only six shots at the hands of the combined clubs in Kimberley. “In Southern Rhodesia, however, they have been more successful, aided no doubt by rain, which gave the greens in that territory the grip which the English bowlers prefer. It is to their credit that in Southern Rhodesia they have won five out of the eight matches played. “In the Rhodesian capital they won two out of three matches, though in the third match they went down with all five rinks for the first time in the present tour, while in Bulawayo they made peels, winning two matches and losing a like number. “Seeing they struck such good form in Rhodesia, it is not to be wondered at that they are full of praise for the Rhodesian greens. “During the past week they have come down to the Transvaal, and are now getting their first taste of the fast greens there. In a fortnight or so they will be in Natal, where the preens on the whole may be more to their liking. Another factor which will not be much in the visitors' favour is the unaccustomed heat which they will experience, the more so as the average aee of the team is rather more than 65.” Up to that point on December 5, they had played 12 matches, winning five and losing seven.
