Farmers’ Union Representation
GROUP SYSTEM OPPOSED. WANGANUI, Jan. 28. For some time now the organisation of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union throughout the Dominion has been functioning under what is known as the group system. Prior to that each provincial district was represented on the Dominion executive by its provincial president. On the ground that it would be a saving of expense the size of the Dominion, executive was reduced, and several provinces were grouped for representation. Wanganui was merged with Wellington Central, Manawatu and Southern Hawke’s Bay, and Mr Lloyd Hammond, of Rata, was appointed representative. Since this system has been under trial it has been subjected to critieism, some of which was ventilated at a meeting of the Wanganui Provincial Executive yesterday. Messrs J. R. Franklin, W. -J. Melville and W. Morrison said that it had tended to put the provinces out of touch with the Dominion executive. Mr Morrison pointed, out, however, that the . new scheme had been adopted with a view to saving expense. Mr Franklin replied that he doubted whether the new scheme could show any saving. It was finally decided, on the motion of Mr Franklin, seconded by Mr D. Sutherland, to urge a return to the old system, less the Advisory Board.
