Wild Hysteria at Society Wedding

Brompton Oratory witnessed London's most brilliant wedding for years when 2000 guests attended the marriage of the Duks of Norfolk and the Hon. Lavinia Strutt. The bride's retinue wore the Duke** racing colours, sky-blue splashed with scarlet. The bride's gown was ol heavy silver clcth cut on slim, close* fitting lines. As the bride has not yet been recelv* ed into the Catholic Church there waa no Nuptial Mass. The 1100 presents received included gifts from Their Majesties and othe* members of the Royal family. There were amazing scenes outside the bride's home in Berkeley EftgsSro and the Brompton Oratory. Crowds numbering thousands, mostly women, stampeded at the sight of the bride. Many fell on the roadways, which were littered with hats, umbrellas and bags, and others were crushed agaivst tha railings, screaming hysterically. The police cordons were broken, but order was restored by mounted police.
Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, the 16th Duke of Norfolk, was born on May 30, 1908, and succeeded his father in 1917. He is the Premier Duke and Hereditary Marshal of England. The House of Howard dates from at least 973, the early name being Hereward. In 1308 Sir Henry Howard was Chief Justice of England. Sir John Howard was created Duke of Norfolk in 1483 —Shakespeare's “Jockey of Norfolk.** Philip, Earl of Arundel, was attainted in 1590 and died in the Tower on October ID, 1595. The Duke owns about 49,000 acres of land and his residences include Norfolk House, St. James* Square, London; Arundel Castle, Sussex; Derwent Hall. Derbyshire; and Beech Hill, Sheffield. At tlie beginning of 1930 he turned his estates into a company called the Fitz-alan-Howard Estates, Limited.
