Bag Increase in Entries
The Marton District A. and P. Association opened the district's series of autumn shows yesterday under ideal weather conditions, which made for a most successful fixture. There was an excellent attendance of the public) the visitors inchiding Hon. R.- Semplo, Minister of Public Works, who opened the show.
There was an encouraging improvement in the number of entries over last year, figures being as follows:—Ponies and light harness horses 60, ring competitions 170, draught horses 16, cattle 90, sheep 390, pigs 56, sheep dogs 28, sewing and needlework 150, home industries 130, primary schools 210, total 1300.
The president, Mr Edward Gudopp, in introducing the Minister, thanked all who had helped to make the exhibition a success. He also referred to the encouraging increase in the number of entries.
Mr temple congratulated the association in choosing such a fine day after the long run of bad weather. He was not an agricultural expert and so could not pass judgment on the exhibits, but he would like to draw attention to the fact that shows carried with them a national benefit, for after all, New Zealand depended a great deal on the quality of the stock it bred. Shows put farmers on their merits and that competitive spirit was reflected in the markets New Zealand supplied in competition with other nations. The Dominion had to produce the best, otherwise it would be a long way behind scratch. Those who organised A. and P. shows were rendering an immeasurable service to the nation. Ho \vas delighted to be present to congratulate the association on its diligence and enterprise and trusted that the show would prove one of the best and most profitable in the district. Cheers were accorded the Minister on the call of the president. HOME INDUSTRIES. (Judge: Mrs. W. F. Stevens, Marton.) White bread: Mrs. E. E. Dallas 1, Mrs. J. Foley 2. Scones: Mrs. H. A.
