“Stage” is Well Set for Wanganui's Summer Meeting

Good Fields Engaged To-day

Cup Should be a Great Race

The Wanganui Jockey Club’s summer meeting, with the Cup as the star attraction, opens to-day and will be concluded on Saturday. At the time of writing the weather is gloriously fine and the prospects are that it will remain so. The Wanganui course is reported to be in splendid order and as the fields are good, racing enthusiasts seem assured of an interesting day’s sport in which recent form should work out. The betting will be conducted under the single pool system and the opening event iz timed to start at noon.

The programme will open with the Westmere Hurdles for which Beau Gallant© is top weight of a field of five acceptors. Beau Gallante has been racing consistently well and with 11.3 in the saddle, he is likely to be favourite for to-day's race. His most dangerous opposition is likely to be provided by Court Arma and Royal Routine. The public may go for Beau Gallante and Court Arma. There are ten acceptors for the Juvenile Handicap, but Aiwai, the topweight, is the only one with placed performances. Of the others Fafner, Amatory, Gaily, Scarf Dance and Airini have some experience. Best backed may be Aiwai and Scarf Dance. The Kai-Iwi Maiden, over six furlongs, is next and, as usual, the majority of the runners will have to bo taken on trust. Kia Tere, People's Idol, Black Fox, All Happiness and Parakino have shown some pace and the public may go most solidly for People’s Idol and Black Fox. The Victory Hack Handicap has drawn a good-class field of eleven and th< issue appears fairly open. Taitoru, Airing, Red Sand, Mister Quex and International all have recent form, while Reipar’s third to Mister Qu£x and Royal Minstrel over six furlongs at Ashhurst indicates that he is very well. Blue Mauritius will have friends. Corowa is improving and a great racb should result. The public may go most strongly for j Red Quex. The Tayworth Hack, over seven and a-quarter furlongs, will be another good race in which the luck of the draw at the post and quickness out of the barrier will be likely to play a part. Waipiro, winner of the Gorge Hack Cup, and Hatuma share pride of place in the weights, and both should prove capable of carrying 9.4 in a solidly run race. Sanhedrin won at Trentham and Great Hope at Feilding, though he failed at Auckland. Cloudy Bay was second in the Gorge Hack Cup and she finished solidly. Of the others, Nightlass and Royal Minstrel have good recent form. The betting will take a fairly wide range with most solid support for . threat Hope, Cloudy Bay and Sanilecirin. 1 The Cup is timed to start at 3.3 U p.m. and there are a dozen acceptors. 1 Recent form is well represented and the punters have been set something of a 1 puzzle. One Whetu, the top-weight, | was third to Spiral and Tiger Gain in the Manawatu Cup and he may be all | the better for the let-up since the holi- 1 day racing. Fit and well, 8.11 will not. stop him to-day. Grand Jury won last* year's Wanganui Cup and his win at Ashhurst last Friday was good. Refresher is another that reads well, while Entail, Musquil, Hunting Queen, Airing, Geitel and Master Cyklon all have good credentials. When the machine has closed it may be found that the public have gone most strongly for One Whetu, Grand Jury and Entail. Half a dozen have been carded for the Flying Handicap, among the acceptors being the Ashhurst winner, Royal Secret. At Ashhurst, Royal Secret carried 8.9 and after tailing the field to the straight she w r ent through the others and won like a good one. She has 9.3 to-day but she have the benefit of an allowance. Pin Money, second first time up at Marton, Lavina, though she disappointed at Ashhurst, Symcony and Ned Cuttle are all possessed of plenty ot speed and a close finish is likely. Though he can gallop, black Friar is an unknown quantity at present and the public may elect to support Royal Secret, Ned Cuttle and Symcony. The day will conclude with the Petre Handicap, which has drawn a field of seven, two of the acceptors having earlier engagements. Rustem's New Year form was good. If reserved, Mister Quex will be <sno of the favourites. Sanhedrin and Golden Enterprise and Imposture are others who will have friends and the betting may point to Mister Quex, Rustem and Imposture. WANGANUI SCRATCHING. Advice was received from Wanganui last evening that Royal Minstrel had been scratched for the Tayworth Hack Handicap. It was also reported that Taitoru, top-weight in the Victory Hack, and Little Robin, an acceptor for the Juvenile Handicap, would not be on hand for to-day. HAWKE’S BAY HORSES FOR WANGANUI The Hawke's Bay district will be poorly represented at Wanganui this week, as the only ones likely to make the trip are Lavina, Royal Minstrel and Master Cyklon (states a Hastings message). Master Cyklon was knocked back from third to last at a critical part of the Ashhurst Cup race and then he ran third. Ho is to take on the Wanganui Cup and being at the minimum and suited to the state of the going, as well as by the short course, he should run prominently. Royal Minstrel won in the early spring, when backward, but he suffered two defeats at Tauherenikau and was beaten into second place in the Komako Handicap last Friday. He always has appealed as a gelding requiring hard work and racing.

WORK AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, Jan. 27. The weather was ideal for training operations this morning, but the majority of the horses were restricted to pacing. Sanhedrin sprinted half a mile in 50sec., Aring registering 48Jsec. Royal Secret covered five furlongs in 1.3. Entail did a couple of rounds of good striding work. He will be ridden by C. Goulsbro in the Cup. Reipar, Parakino, Imposture, Missal, Scarf Dance, Collodion, and a number of others did pace work. Refresher, Taitoru, Ripple, and several others are due to arrive this afternoon. FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. Wotan, who is to leave for Australia shortly, has built up remarkably and continues to work in great style (states a Hawera message). He is scarcely recognisable as the same horse that left there in the spring to make history in the Melbourne Cup. Additional riding engagements announced for Wanganui to-day are:—H. Callahan, Kia Ora; G. Dowrick, Naughty Marietta; C. Cole, Corowa and Kia Tere; S. Hawkes, Taitoru. The following horses were omitted in the Takapuna acceptances: — Calliope Handicap: Airam. Zealandia Handicap: Triune, Wahine Reihi. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS FOR TAKAPUNA Riding engagements for the first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting on Friday include the following:— A Tinker: Kilonsa. T. Williams: Gay Cavalier. R. J. Fearn: School Song, Manatero. J. F. Fergus: Impasto. A. G. Murray: ■ Droll, Waitaka, Nuclei. G. JenkiDs: Royal Broney. E. Manson: Lady Defoe. BEST OF ins YEAR FRANCIS DRAKE'S RECORD With the North Island Challenge Stakes, Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, and either the Great Northern (champagne Stakes or the Canterbury Champagne or Challenge Stakes before him, Francis Drake has only to train on to bring his winnings to the vicinity of £3OOO. The Auckland Racing Club Welcome ! Stakes, Wellesley Stakes, Canterbury Welcome Stakes, Royal Stakes and Wellington Stakes are his five victories to date, and they have yielded £IS7O, waile seconds in the Juvenile Handicap at the Marton spring meeting and in the Great Northern Foal Stakes brought another £llO, making his total winnings . £I9BO. % | In any case, it is now unlikely that his earnings will be exceeded by any other two-year-old, and on form he is entitled to be named the best of his year.
