Fined for Assaulting Ranger
‘‘ A SERIOUS MATTER ’ * to “Times.”) HASTINGS, Jan. 27. Charged with assault, Frank Me* I Grath appeared before Mr J. Miller, S.M., in the Hastings Magistrate's Court this morning. Defendant pleaded KHilty and was fined «£2, in default 14 days* imprisonment. Senior-Sergeant Sivyer said that McGrath bad assaulted Mr H. A. Green, the borough ranger, who was about to warn him concerning cattle which were wandering on the road at the time. There was no suggestion of serious injury having been inflicted, but Mi Green suffered cuts and had his shirl torn. McGrath was quite a good citizen and had no previous police record Mr W. Selwyn AverilJ t defending, said that defendant’s cows were being driven from hie dairy back to the Daddock when the ranger, who had impounded his cattle a week beforet, call* ed him over and insulted him. McGrath had asked him to withdraw the remark used. The ranger refused, so he caught hold of him and asked him again.
The Magistrate pointed out that to interfere with a ranger in the execution of his duty was a serious matter. The fine was generally more substantial, but in the circumstances he would treat him lightly. Time to pay was granted.
