Two Maoris Lost In Mysterious Tragedy

DEATH OF TWO COUSINS. BODIES FOUND IS HOLE Pet- Press Association. WHANGAREI, Jan. 26. A mysterious tragedy occurred at Wliananaki yesterday afternoon resulting in the deaths of two cousins, Naha Toki, married, aged 55; and Airs. Tutu Neliua, aged 53. Toki had for some months been working in an isolated spot, blasting a deep hole in a rock from which he expected to secure gold ore. The hole, which was near the beach, was filled with water at high tide and this water htid to be baled out before operations could be resumed. ffhree Auckland boys who had been invited by Toki to inspect the mine were horrified on arriving to see the bodies in the hole, which was full of water and seaweed. Airs. Tehua’s thirteen-year-old daughter told the Coroner at an inquest that her mother, who had been hauling kerosene tins of water from a fifteen foot deep hole in which Toki was standing, had changed places with the man at noon. The girl hauled up two tins of water, but there was no response w'ben the tin was sent down the third time. The girl then went home, without having, seen either her another or Toki alive again. The inquest was adjourned. did well for Town against the weakened Country team. Air W. H. Wilson considered it was an easy way out for Wellington. Air Ongley: We cun replace bowlers fairh well, but they' have lour of Country’s best batsmen, who will bo very hard to replace. Mr Hardie: Do you think players will come from Nelson, Taranaki aud Hawke's Bay? Mr Ongley: Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki men will, I think, be available. Air Hardie: Is it a decision of tho Wellington Association? The chairman: Apparently. 1 asked them if they could not send men up to replace the Country players iu the Flunket Shield team, but the reply was: “Impossible." Air Wilson and Air Hardie then moved the resolution referred to above and this will be forwarded in due course to the Wellington Cricket Association.
