Stock Route to Dannevirke
POHANGINA SETTLERS WAIT ON MINISTER. The need for a stock track over the Ruahines from Dannevirke, was urged by Messrs A. R. J. Palmer and L. Saveli, of Pohangina, who waited on the Alinister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, in Palmerston North last evening. Air Palmer said the idea was approved by interested organisations but the proposed route had not been officially inspected. There would be needed four miles of road to join up branch roads on each sides of the range. This route was in addition to the one now under way across the range from Woodville to Ashhurst.
Answering the Minister, Mr A. R. Acheson, departmental engineer, stated the route had not been surveyed while the bridge at Rauwai was due for replacement in five years.
The Alinister said it was useless him discussing the matter till ho had discovered the economic advantages and cost of the work. He agreed that stock must be taken off the main highways wherever possible not only for the benefit of the farmer but also the travelling motorist who would feel safer. The department would look into the matter raised and would view the request of the deputation sympathetically.
Mr Palmer said ho thought the road could be put through at a reasonable cost. Air J. Hodgens, ALP., announced that Hon, J. G. Cobbe was also of opinion that the road was worthy of consideration.
