PUKEHOU WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING Fukehou Women's Institute held ita monthly meeting last Thursday when iu tho unavoidable absence through ill* n«ss of Mrs Murley, president, Mr* Campbell presided over the meeting. After the usual business routine wan over, Mrs Neave demonstrated on silk lamp-shade making. A pleasing feature of the afternoon was when Mrs Campbell called on Mrs Ronald Phillips who was recently married, to open the gifts given to her by her fellow members. After the parcels were opened and viewed, Mrs Phillips in a neat little speech thanked one and all for the many and useful gifts they had given her. Tho competitions for the afternoon were a hand-made handkerphief, which resulted, Mrs Donald I, Mrs Cullen 2 and 3; best bloom, Mrs Donald 1, Mrs Cullen 2. A delightful tea was served by tbq hostesses, Mcsdames Cullen and Priest and Misses Sinclair and Moore. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very happy afternoon to a close. SURPRISE PARTY FOR MISS GIFFORD A very enjoyable evening was spent at tho residence of Mr and Mrs T. XL R. Gifford, Colenso Avenue, Napier, on Friday evening, when Miss Zoe Brewster and Mr Charles Lee took up a surprise party arranged in honour oi tho birthday of Miss Ailsa Gifford. Tho garden at the back of tho housa was lit with Chinese lanterns, and therq dancing and games filled in the greater part of the evening. * Lovely dahlias decorated the dining ri.oin, where a choice party supper wa« served, including uu iced birthday cake. Miss Ailsa Gifford wore a very dainty frock of blue taffetas. Thero wero present: Mr and Mrs T. H. R. Gifford, Misses Ailsa and Hilary Gifford, Zoe Brewster, A. and J. Somer-set-Smith, L. Norrie, J. La Roche. Jocelyn Nesbitt, A. Apperley, Joyce Fairey, Lesley Murray, Audrey Jacobsen (Wellington), J. Newton. Messrs Chas. Lee, F. Corner, L. Pointon, J. Malcolm, T. Gray, D. Densham, P. Shirley, G. Fox, W. Taylor, J. Lee. Colin Gray, K. Carey and D. l'ufflett, WELCOME GIVEN TO NEW VICAR’S WIFE Mrs Hyde, wife of the new vicar of St. Paul’s parish, Wairoa, was the guest of honour at an ‘‘at home’* given by Mrs James Murray to enable her to meet, some of her parishioners, and to make her welcome to Wairoa.
