Final Stages of Dominion Croquet Tournament
MRS. GAMBRILL STILL IN OPEN EVENT. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 25. The New Zealand croquet championships were continued to-day in showery weather. Heavy rain in tho morning threatened to spoil, play, but conditions improved during the afternoon. Three events, the men's championship, championship doubles, and level singles, were completed and satisfactory progress was made in the remaining events. The greens were again in perfect order. Results are:— Men’s Championship, First life.—Third round: A. G. Ross beat F. L. Hartnell, 26—1; A. G. Gibbs beat G. Hart, 26—24. Final: A. GRoss beat A. G. Gibbs, 26 —3. Second life.—Final: A. G. Ross beat H. Stratton,222.6 —2. Women’s Championship. First life.—Third round: Mrs Gambrill beat Mrs C. Watkins, 26—21; Mrs W. Corbet beat Mrs M. Pitcaithlv, 26—8. Semi-final: Mrs W. Colo beat Mrs Gambrill, 26 —0. Second life.—Third round: Mrs Whibley beat Mrs Lowery, 26—16. Level Singles. Final.—G. Waterhouse beat Mrs Turner, 26—9, 26—16. Open Championship. Third round.—Mrs Gambrill beat Mrs Palmer, 26—1,223;6 —3; H. Stratton beat Mrs Henderson, 18 —26, 26 —16, 26—1. Championship Doubles. Semi-final. —R. McCreath and Mrs Corbet beat Miss Washer and A. Gibbs, 26 —5. Final: R. McCreath and Mrs Corbet beat Mesdames Smith and Gilbert, 26—24. PLAYERS IN FORM. In spite of his unexpected defeat by H. A. Penn in the second round of tho open championship, A. G. F. Ross on Saturday defeated Penn in the semifinal of the second life of the men's championship. Another notable gamo was in the first life of tho men’s championship, in which he defeated H. Stratton, 26—13. In the final of the second life Ross gained a further victory over Stratton. In her match with R. McCreath in the open championship, Mrs R. Gambrill scored a good win. She hit in first in the first game and took both balls to No. 2 hoop. Shooting in, McCreath in two turns went round to four back with one ball. Mrs Gambrill failed to pick up the ball and McCreath went round with his other ball, which he put on the peg. McCreath failed to hit in, and Mrs Gambrill, playing brilliant croquet, finished the game, 26 —13. In the second game, Mrs Gambrill began with a break to four back. McCreath made the third hoop and broke. Picking up a long shot, Mrs Gambrill went round to three back, where sho failed to connect. McCreath made five hoops beforo Mrs Gambrill put her balls on tho stick, with the score 26—8. BENNETT BUTTONS. A Bennett Buttons match wa-s played at Manawatu greens on Monday when Mesdames Gould and King (holders) defeated Mesdames Snolling and Mills, 26—12. POLLOCK STARS. In a Pollock Stars match at Northern yesterday, the holders, Mesdames Brown and McMurray, were defeated by Mesdames Langford and T. Simpson, 11 —26. BRIGHTON MALLETS. A Brighton Mallets match was played at Northern yesterday, Mrs Anderson and Miss Read (holders) defeating Mesdames Snelling and Gould, 20—15.
