New Screen Play Is Strong Drama
‘ ‘ ENLIGHTEN THY DAUGHTER ’' POINTS WISE MORAL (Mayfair: Screening To-day.) Whether your taste in screen fare runs to stern drama, gay comedy, or lilting tunes, you will probably find “Enlighten Thy Daughter" quite to your liking, ter it is a picture that cleverly combines those several diversified elements of entertainment. It is, too, a picture with a wide general appeal, ior, although its messago is directed to parents, it presents a story of gay, modem youth, that will more than satisfy their children. The story traces the brief life of Lillian Stevens from her graduation to her tragic death. Lillian, sheltered by her unthinking parents, knows nothing of life and the vital problems it presents. A series of unwise romances The boy, to whom she has become deeply attached, quickly tires of her and seeks diversion with her cousin. Presently, Lillian learns that she is about to become a mother. She pleads with, the boy to marry her, but he is adamant. Again Lillian is faced with a problem that is too big for her. She struggles weakly and briefly against fate, soon resigning herself to defeat and suicide. The cast is splendid. Miriam Battista, iu the role of Lillian, has done no finer work since her memorable performance as the little crippled child in “Humoresque." Herbert Rawlinson is impressive as the doctor, and Ara Geralu, of Broadway stage fame, is especially convincing as Lillian's mother. Among the others whose efforts warrant special mention are Wesley Barry, Russel Hicks, Edmund MacDonald, Claire Whitney, Robert Emmett Keane and Beth Barton.
