LIGHT PROGRAMME AT AWAPOT FEW HORSES ENGAGED AT WANGANUI After tile Wellington and Aslihurst meetings, the Awapuni training centre is not well represented at the Wanganui Summer meeting, which opens to-morrow, and yesterday’s programme was a light one, moßt of the horsed out on the tracks being restricted to easy exercise. Martara, after his profitable trip to Trentham, was given a light dose of physic and he was not worked yesterday morning. He is none the worse for his recent racing. It is not known at present where he will next sport silk. Dungarvan has been nominated for the Taranaki-Egmont Cup. Ho was not given a serious task yesterday. Among the Awapuni horses entered for Wanganui to-morrow are Kitty Quinn, Symcony, Black Fox, Cloudy Bay and Limbohm. Symcony, with W. J. Broughton in the saddle, was sprinted five furlongs and she moved very smoothy to out the distance out in 1.5 1-5, after requiring 25 2-5 for the first two furlongs. She was still going on with it when she reached the post. Cloudy Bay, who beat all but Waipiro in the George Hack Cup at Ashhurst, was galloped six furlongs, G. Tattersall being the pilot, and she finished strongly in 1.20 3-5, after taking 14 1-5 for the first three furlongs. It was not a bad gallop as the flags were out in the middle of the course. The nice-looking son of Nigger Minstrel and Silver Grey, Black Fox (Broughton), was sprinted six furlongs with the half brother of Manawatu, by Lackham (R. Chisholm) and Black Fox, who had it on his companion at the finish, was doing his work easily. They were timed to run the last five in 1.8 2-5, and Black Fox could have improved on this. Severe, Gay Molly, who has built up into a very solid filly, Alby, Beaulac and Bodyline, were given easy exercise and Bodyline was on the load. Catalogue (S. Anderson) scampered over half a milo and he cut the last three out in 37 3-5, moving attractiveWlldflower (Tattersall) sprinted five furlongs in 1.8 3-5, not being under pressure at auy stage. Probably the most interesting item on the morning’s programme was the exhibition of hurdling by Benedictine (W. J. McDowell), Kitty Quinn (P. Rae) and Forest Glow (L. Parks). They were given a round over the schooling fences and all of them jumped quickly and cleanly. The pace was on and Benedictine was in front with Kitty Quinn in second place when they passed the post. Tail Light (Tattersall) and Aurora’s Love (Broughton) were companions over three furlongs and Tail Light was a shade in front at the finish after taking 38 4-5 for the distance. Pango, looking none the worse fox his good effort in the Ashhurst Cup, was given light pace work, and Round Score was worked on the plough. W. J. Broughton’s riding engagements for Wanganui to-morrow are Scarf Dance, Imposture, Royal Secret and Geitel. WANGANUI TRIALS COURSE IN GOOD ORDER WANGANUI, Jan. 26. The weather was fine for the final gallops in preparation for the Wanganui meeting, which is opening on Thursday. The No. 1 grass track was in good order. IT. Dulieu is the only visiting trainer to put in an appearance so far, but several are coming to-night. Entail (F. Latham) went six furlongs by himself in 1.15, the first half-mile in 49 3-ssec. The Cup candidate did it nicely. Imposture (R. Morrison) and Missal (Latham) did five furlongs in 1.3, the first quarter of a mile in 241-sec. They finished together. Scarf Dance finished a length ahead of Gay Marionette after half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Parikino covered five furlongs in 1.3. Collodion and Reipar did six furlongs in 1.16 2-5, tho last five furlongs in 1.3 2-5. The former was a length in front at the finish. Royal Secret, Red Sand, Sanhedrin, Airing, and Pin Money did solid pacing. Etiquette covered five furlongs in 1.3 4-5. Court Arma went a round of the schooling hurdles with Bazaino. Tho latter finished in front, but clouted a couple of hurdles hard. Court Arma jumped cleanly and could have done better. HENRI’S CHOICE. For a horse with a broken neck there is only one end, and that a quick one, but tho famous exception, known to racing as Henri's Choice, again came into the limelight at Newbury, England, at the beginning of last montn. Henri’s Choice, a grey gelding by Motley, owned by Mr B. Warner, broke his neck in a race at Aintree in 1935 while competing in the Liverpool Hurdles, for which he was favourite on the strengtn of his consistently good form earlier in tho season. His owner, on ascertaining that the fracture was not complete, refused to have the animal shot, and in a remarkably short time ho was pronounced to have recovered and to be ready to go into work again. This was done, and Henri’s Choice won twice during the fiat racing season last year, adding further to his fame on December 2, when ho won the Banks Hurdles by six lengths. Ho is now a seven-year-old and almost white. His trainer, O. Anthony, said flat racing had restored his confidence, and that he had never jumped so well prior to his accident.

TAKAPUNA ACCEPTANCES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The following are the acceptances for the first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on Friday:—

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES According to a New Plymouth message Refresher is in splendid order for Wanganui. Refresher i 3 an acceptor for tho Wanganui Cup. Among tho acceptors or the Kai Iwi maiden event to-morrow is Parakino, tho 3-year-old gelding trained by H. W. Johnston at Wanganui. Parakino was started in the Novice Stakes at Ashhurst and after being prominent to the home turn he finished sixth. An improvement on that form would make the son of Kiosk a tougher proposition tomorrow. Royal Secret carried 8.9 to victory in the Pohangina Handicap last Friday Notium and Lavina filled the minor places. Royal Secret’s weight for the Flying Handicap at Wanganui is 9.3 and her effort at Ashhurst suggests that she may repeat that performance at Wanganui. Black Friar, the three-year-old Gascony colt owned by Mrs M. S. Curie, of W'anganui, finished alongside Ned Cuttle at the end of half a mile run in 50sec. at Hawera on Saturday. Black Friar has come on well recently, and promises to get back to his best form shortly. When Cuddle races in Australia this autumn she will be under tho charge of her regular trainer, T. R. George. During the past few days, George has made arrangements enabling him to leave for Sydney on February 2, and he wil prepare the mare for her Victorian engagements next month. L. J. Ellis may also go across to do the riding. While George is away his home team will be in charge of P. Reardon. Racing at Wanganui to-morrow and Saturday, and at Takapuna on Friday and Saturday. Betting at Wanganui will be under the single-pool system. Mr M. Millar, of Palmerston North, the owner of Greenwich, who purchased the dam, Summer Time, at the Westmere dispersal sale, has resold her to Mr C. A. Haig, of Adelaide. The purchaser of the Limond mare Prestige at the Westmere sale was Mr Frank Ormond, owner of the Karamu Stud, Hastings, and she will bo mated with the B’landford horse Bulandshar. It was stated at the sale, and published, that tho purchaser was Mr J. D. Ormond.

Nominations for all events at the Woodville summer meeting, to be held on Saturday and Monday, February 20 and 22, are due by 8 o ’clock next Monday evening.
