Out of Gaol and in Again
CLERK EMBARKS ON CAREER OF CRIME AUCKLAND, Jan. 25. Leaving prison a week before Christmas after serving a four years’ sentence, John Thomas Hartley, a clerk, aged 30, went on a drinking bout and embarked on a further career of crime. He pleaded guilty to-day to live charges of obtaining goods and credit by fraud. The police said Hartley, in a statement, said he had obtained two watches from city business firms, stating that they were for other people. While stopping at an hotel he had met a young man who said he could use his flat while he was absent on holiday in Sydney. Hartley visited tho fiat and stole a radio set and suit valued at £3O. Commenting on Hartley’s lengthy list of previous convictions, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., sentenced him to six months' imprisonment for the theft of the radio and the suit, to be followed by two years’ reformative detention. On the other charges he was convicted and discharged.
