Illegal Trawling is Whangarei Complaint
ILLEGAL TRAWLING IS whangarei c ACTION TO BE TAKEN Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, Jan. 23. “I thought the days of pirating were past, but that is evidently not so,” said Air. R. H. Allan at to-day’s meeting ol the Whangarei Harbour Board, when he raised the question of the operations of trawlers within the Whangarei Heads. “The matter is becoming very serijous, ” continued Air. Allan. “On January 6, when I was camping at the heads, a trawler came right up the channel and as soon as it had commenced operations none of the campers were able to catch any fish. There were a lot of visitors there, and they depend on fish to augment their food supplies. I know of two people from Dargaville who were so disgusted that they went to Tinopai to complete their holiday, which is not a good advertisement for the district. 1 think the board should take some strong action iu the matter, and I move that it be brought under the notice of the Alarino Department.” Air. P. Gardner: Is trawling in these waters illegal? The chairman, Mr. J. A. Finlayson: Yes, it is, and the board is only too anxious to have people come forward with evidence. The motion was carried unanimously.
