Wild Stampede

CATTLE ON BRIDGE GISBORNE, January 23. An unusual accident occurred at Frasertown at 8 o’clock this morning at the southern approach to the traffic bridge. A party of drovers was engaged in crossing a large mob of cattle on their way northward, and when half-way over the bridge the leading animals turned and dashed back, stampeding the whole mob, which desperately pushed toward the southern end. The guard rails on bot sides of the approach gave way and five animals were killed by falling on to the bank below, two wero drowned, and several were injured. The two drovers, Mr G. White and Mr A. Stevens, escaped injury. The cattle were from Mr J. Boyd’s Clydebank Estate.
