River Threatening Railway

Line EROSION SERIOUS AT ASHHURST Erosion in the railway reserve near the railway embankment at the Pohangina river bridge, has again occurred with the past floods, a strip fully half a chain in width going into the river. Of the three groynes erected just over a year ago, only part of one remains and the river has now formed a loop running fully two hundred yards from tho end of the bridge. The bank which consists of looso shingle mainly, runs away with each fresh and unless something is done soon, one will probably see tho Pohangina running along tho embankment with the next old man flood. Fully a strip 10 yards wide has gone in the past 18 months.
