General Motors Strike May Spread
CONDITIONS IN FLINT GROWING WORSE. United Press Association—Ey Electric Telegraph.—Copyrlgh L Received Sunday, 9.50 p.m. WASHINGTON, Jan. 23. Questioned regarding Mr. Lewis' challenge to aid labour, President Roosevelt issued a statement: "There come moments when statements in conversation and headlines are not in order." This is regarded in all quarters as rebuke to Mr. Lewis, but the latter reiterated his assertions that President Roosevelt is on the side cf tho strikers and has ordered them to fight to a finish in a telegram to the General Motors Corporation strikers. Mr. Sloan (head of General Motors) returned to New York and issued a statement promising to put back to work as many employees as possible at the plants in which there was no strike but failure of this effort is feared as the union officials conferred at Detroit and mapped out plans to extend the strikes to other General Motors Corporation units. Conditions at Flint are growing worse. Many strikers have been forced on to the relief rolls to get food. 125,000 IDLE. EVICTION MEASURES POSSIBLE. Received Sunday, Midnight. DETROIT, Jan. 24. It was indicated that General Motors will take legal, action for the eviction of the sit-downers. Mr Knudson said 125,000 men and 50 plants were idle. He will try to provide two days work weekly for the 95,000 made idle by the strike. Governor Murphy is undaunted and is working on new plans for the resumption of negotiations,
