Elderly Ex-Lord Mayors Come to Blows t GUILDHALL'S DIGNITY SHATTERED. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, Jan. 23. The Daily Herald says the dignity of London’s Guildhall was shattered by w'hat a former Lord Mayor, Sir Alfred Bower, later described as a 44 bit of horseplay." Sir Alfred Bower, aged 78, was awaiting luncheon in the Aldermen’s retiring room after a meeting of the finance committee when a former Lord Mayor, Sir Phene Neal, aged 77, entered. Sir Alfred dashed forward and punched him in the ribs, saying: "That’s for what you did to me on Tuesday." Sir Alfred Bower then doffed his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and invited 'Sir Phene Neal to come on, adding: “I’ll punch your jaw," whereupon Sir Daniel Collins intervened. Sir Alfred Bower later said: “A man often slaps another on tho back or ribs. Besides, a man takes off his coat to wash his hands. Sir Phene Neal and I lunched together later and toasted each other.’ ’ Sir Pheno Neal said: "I wag not hurt and am taking no notice of the affair. Sir Alfrod has the extraordinary idea that I twisted his arm, causing a bruise, at the Alderman’s Court on Tuesday, but 1 was only in the room a minute so it could not have happened."
