Great Meeting Ends

BIG TOTE INCREASE. FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Wellington races which concluded to-day saw a phenomenal rise in totalisator speculation, the machine receipts for the three days rising from £117,766 to £188,235 10s; an increase of £71,059 10s. The going was firm. Big Fields. * A great field contested tho Wallaceville Handicap, seventeen going to the post. Charade hit the front early in tho race and won not headed, though she had to bo hard ridden to win very narrowly. Taumau ran up to take her on, but she shook him off, and finally tho chief trouble came from Revival, who failed only by half a head to get her. Lady {Siegfried, was a good third, Recollection and Le Grand following. Le Grand was a shade unlucky. The winner pair over a score. Favourite Scores. Tho favourite Haughty Winner, pulled his backers through in tho Hopeful Stakes, but had to be ridden right out to beat Brunhild, who was at a good price. Haughty Winner, Geira, Only One, Brunhild and Top Row were prominent in the run to the course proper. Brunhild challenged very gamely, but Haughty Winner got home by half a length. Siguard and Only One followed and then came Geira, Top Row, Bluffer and Accomplice. Won in Last Stride. The Bigot lost the Melrose Handicap through failure to come home straight, Debham getting up to defeat him in. the last stride. After leading with Nereus most of the way The Bigot had taken charge in the straight, and looked a winner till he began to hang out. Sansfoy came from the back to be a good third and Sandhedrim, who also came from the back, was fourth. All the Way. Martara won the Summer Handicap running away after being in the lead throughout, Great Star, Shy, Queen of Song, Dungarvan, Rona Bay, Ponty, Essex and Arctic King was the order after passing the mile, and the chief change in the run to the straight was that Arctic King moved up. However, Martara was clear entering the straight where Dungarvan, Rona Bay, Shy, Ponty and Arctic King were handy. Martara went on to win by half a dozen lengths from Shy who finished well with Dungarvan a length back and Queen of Song, Ponty, Arctic King, Tunneiler and Essex following. Dungarvan, Shy and Arctic King ran good races. A Poor Field. Lady Ina was too solid for the weak opposition in the Kaitoke Handicap. Orate led on to the course proper from Jazz Boy, Mittie, Allunga and Lady Ina, but did not stay, and Allunga ran to the front only to be beaten nicely in the run home by a neck. Old Surrey was a poor third, Airing fourth and Gladium next. Rebel Lad Improves. Oratory began very quickly in the Thorndon Handicap and led to the straight from Concert Pitch, Haut Monde, Rebel Lad, Boomerang and Passion Flower. Concert Pitch ran to the front at the distance but in the finish had to give way to Rebel Lad, who beat him by a length. Oratory was a fair third, then Haut Monde, Manetho, Boomerang and Darecourt. Rebel Lad's win was decisive and was an improvement on other form. Convincing Win. Laughing Lass won the City Handicap convincingly. She came on to the. course proper abreast of Royal Dance. Pakanui and Mata Hari, and in the run home went away for an easy win by two lengths over Peter Beckford. Knockfin was a fair third and Royal Dance fourth, with Mata Hari, and Pakanui following. Peter Beckford was unludij-. Narrow Win. Ilithyia, Rotoma, Stratosphere, Nightlass, Helen Ford and Corroboree were the leaders in the run to the straight in the Kelburn Handicap and in the run home Helen Ford finished well to beat High Glee narrowly, with Stratosphere third, then Corroboree, Capo Gabo and Willie Win.
