New Civet Cat Species Discovered in Panama

PHILADELPHIA.—A new species of civet cat, discovered by an expedition in Panama of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, has been named “Bassaricyon pauli,” in honour of A. J. Drexel Paul Jr., who accompanied tho expedition. The name is bestowed on the animals in the latest scientific publication of tho academy by Robert lv. Enders of the zoological department of Swathmore College. Dr. Enders, who was a member of the expedition, is also on the editorial advisory committee of the academy’s new popular magazine, Frontiers. The civet cats were discovered in the hilly country of tho Province of d* Chiriqui in Panama. The native name for them is “1100-Hoo-Nah. ”
