First Step in Undeclared European War
VOLUNTEER INTERVENTION IN SPAIN. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Co pyrlgh t. Received Saturday, 2 a.m. MADRID, Jan. 22. President Azana, in a broadcast from Valencia, ridiculed the suggestion that the Government was fighting for Communism and syndicalism. On the contrary it faced a foreign invasion threatening not merely the political regime but Spain’s very independence. It was tantamount to breaking the equilibrium of Western Europe. “From its inception I feared it might prove the first step in a general undeclared war,” he added.
