Local Body Amalgamation
DIVISION OF OPINION REGARDING BENEFITS Per Press Association. NELSON, Last Night. That there is a division of opinion on the benefits to be derived from a widespread amalgamation of local bodies was shown at a conference held in the Waimea County Council Chambers. From the statements of delegates it was gathered: (1) That the Tahunanui Town Board favoured amalgamation; (2) the Wakapuak* Drainage Board favoured absorption if it could be shown that the interests of ratepayers in its district were to receive equal or better service, but at present it did not think that would result; (3) the Motueka River Board favoured amalgamation either with the Waimea County Council or the Motueka Borough; (4) the Motueka Borough Council was opposed to amalgamation; (5) the Richmond Borough Council was opposed to absorption by the County Council but would favour becoming part of the City Council area in future years, (6) the Waimea County Council thought it would be in the interest of the district if part of Tahuna, the boroughs of Richmond and Motueka, the Motueka River Board and the Wakapuaka Drainage Board w-“o absorbed by the county.
