GEAR CHANGING.

Here are a few pointers on gear changing. Bear in mind that the engine speed must be increased when changing to a lower speed, and decreased when changing up, or to a higher speed. While pre-selective gears will always engage after positioning the lever and depressing the clutch pedal, it is most important to speed the motor up or at least, or alternatively, to reengage the pedal very steadily when changing to a lower speed. For example you may desire to coast down a hill using second speed. This may be preselected from lop, but simultaneously with the clutch pedal action the accelerator should also be depressed to speed the motor up. Wheu once the significance of this is appreciated and the severe jerk of a sudden change down without corresponding engine speed has been experienced, the habit will be formed.
