Government forces surrounded Los Angeles Hill, live miles to the south of the capital, completely cutting off the rebels. Germany and Italy are firmly resolved to oppose the establishment of Bolshevism in Spain, declared General Goeri-ng in a statement to tho Italian press upon his arrival at Capri for a few days’ holiday. Germany and ltaiy held the same ideas and opinions and tho same system of authority and order. He denied that Italy attempted to influence Germany to abandon her present policy towards Spain, declaring that the two countries were still pursuing the same policy. , Ho added that the jircsent BerlinRome harmony would be further strengthened by continuous contracts and a joint examination of all problems. The Times’ Rome correspondent says the Italian acceptance of the British proposals for the control of volunteers in Spain is rogarded as certain but it is believed both Italy and Germany will insist that control shall be exercised only by the four great western powers, excluding Russia. Not Acceptable to Belligerents SCHEME FOR CONTROL OF VOLUNTEERS. LONDON, Jan. 19. The Spanish Government and the insurgents have replied to the Non-In-tervention Committee’s draft scheme for the control of volunteers. Both find it unacceptable. Lady Hastings, at a {Spanish relief conference, suggested that Australia and New Zealand should send wool and butter to succour women and children who were victims of Fascist aggression. The {Spanish relief conference is an international conference for the relief of Republican {Spain. Delegates from 26 nations are attending. French Warships to Reply to Attacks PARIS, Jan. 19. French warships in Spanish waters have been ordered to reply to any attack made against them. Food From Russia to Aid Loyalists BARCELONA, Jan. 19. A huge crowd welcomed the Russian ship Rion with food from Odessa and 12 cases of childrens’ presents from Moscow factory children. A message from Perpignan states that a large convoy for the Spanish Loyalists has been sent to Spain as a gift from the international Labour movement. The consignment includes corned beef, salted cod, coffee, and chocolate. Protest Lodged Against Stopping British Ships (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Jan. 19. The British Ambassador to Spain, Sir H. G. Chilton, who is at Hendaye, lias been instructed to .enter a protest with the Spanish insurgent authorities against the case of interference with a British ship on the high seas on January 12, when the Cardiff steamer Bramhill was fired upon by the insurgent armed traM'ler Larache. Tho protest M-as announced at question time in the House of Commonse by the Foreign Secretary, Air Anthony Eden, who added that a British cruiser had ascertained that the Bramhill carried no contraband.
