Snobbery in Amateur Tennis
AN APT COMPARISON. PERRY’S BEST TEN. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Wednesday, 11.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Jan. 20. The New York Times, in a leader, commenting on Perry’s article asserting that tennis officials are guilty ot snobbery towards professionals which is tho only reason why thero is no open tournament, says: “No one thinks Kreisler’s violin playing or Toscanini’s conducting is less inspired because they are paid for it.” In a N.A.N.A. copyright article Fred Perry says; “The following is a list of what I consider the ten greatest tennis players of the year against all of whom L have played: Von Cramrn, Budge, Quist, Austin, Crawford, Grant, Allison, McGrath and Menzel. Three tied for tenth place: Parker, Boussus and Henkel. “To Quist must go third place on his victory in the Australian championship and his record m Europe. Throughout the trip he was defeated only by Budge. He surprised us in the Davis Cup matches by accounting for Austin in four sets. He has a game which can be improved. I think we will hear a great deal about Quist this summer. Crawford Mas the leading player of the world only three years ago. McGrath is one of those players no one is able to fathom. His freak backhand makes him a difficult player to beat.”
