Kiwitea County Council

MONTHLY MEETING t The Kiwitea County Council met at Kimbolton yesterday for its monthly meeting, Cr. L. T. McLean, chairman, presiding. Councillors present were W. P. Shaw, J. A. T. Brown, J. 11. Wililamson, W. Hair, F. E. Tappin, W. G. Clapham, D. T. Couper and J. Beard. Correspondence The Acting Commissioner of Transport forwarded copy of the Traffic Sign Regulations, 1936, and Traffic Sign (speed limits) Regulations.—Received The Hon. Minister of Transport wrote with reference to road safety and forwarding the recommendations of the New Zealand Road Safety Council deal ing with hazards arising out of faulty road conditions, and drawing the attention of local authorities to certain points applicable to roads and streets. —Received. The Department of Industries aud Commerce advised that the Tourist and Publicity Department had decided to produce at intervals of six months, a small pocket-sized booklet entitled "New Zealand Calendar," and requesting the council’s co-operation in the matter.—Held over. The Kairanga County Council forwarded cheque for £23G 2s lOd being this council’s share of the heavy traffic license fees collected for . the quartci ended November 30 last. —Received. The Palmerston North Hospital Board advised that it had decided fo withdraw the District Nurse from Kimbolton, and offered to take over the section purchased by the council for the erection of a District Nurse’s cottage at Kimbolton. —It was decided that the council retain the section. The Health Inspector, Palmerston North forwarded a report on his inspections of the county during the quarter ended December 31 last.— Received. The Conciliation Commissioner wrote enclosing copy of notice to add this council as a party to the industrial dispute between the Wellington Clerical Workers’ Industrial Union of Workers and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., and other employers listed; and from the N.Z. Counties’ Association with reference to the same.—The council decided to favour a separate award to cover local body clerks. Overseer’s Report The county overseer, Air. F. W\ Eggers, reported to the meeting as follows:

* ‘Cheltenham Riding. The usual maintenance work had been attended to throughout the riding, and the sections of the Nos. 553 and 377 Main Highways had received frequent attention from the power grader plant. "Kiwitea Riding. —32 cubic yards of maintenance metal had been delivered on the section of Kimbolton road near the deviation of the No. 52 Alain Highway. The roadman had attended to maintenance work throughout the rid ing, and roads other than Main Highways are in good condition. "Waituna Riding. —The section of the No. 377 Alain Highway had been kept in good condition by the power grader plant. The roadman had attend ed to the usual maintenance work on this section of road us well as widening a bad curve on Livingstone Hill. The section of tho Waituna Valley and Kiwitea-Tapuao roads to the junction with the Alangapipi road had been considerably improved by the power grader plant. The contractors wijl be making a start delivering maintenance metal in this riding in a few days’ time. "Onga Riding.—The section of the No. 3 Alain Highway ‘had been kept in good condition by tho power grader plant. The contractors had delivered maintenance metal on the No. 377 Alain Highway, Williamson’s road east, Wilson’s line and the Waituna valley road. Minor repair work had been carried out on roads other than highways. Tho roadman had been engaged chiefly in taking delivery of maintenance metal, and extending the fence at tho Waituna pit. “Kimbolton Riding. Additional maintenance metal has been delivered by the contractor on the No. 52 main highway; also approximately 300 cubic yards on roads other than main highways. The sections of the main highways have been kept in good condition by the power grader plant, further grading work will bo carried out on side roads during the current month. The roadman has been engaged taking delivery of maintenance metal, and carrying out minor repairs to roads in the riding. “Peep-o-Day Riding.—Grading work has been carried out on the scctiou of tho No. 52 main highway by the No. 2 grader plant. The Peep-o-Day road and a section of the Kiwitea-Tapuife road have been by the grader. Hogg’s road has also been trimmed. The contractor will be making a start during the current week delivering maintenance metal on the sec tion of the No. 52 main highway. The roadman in the western section has attended to the usual maintenance work as well as repairing damage to road surfaces caused by the recent storms. “Pakihikura Riding. —The recent storms caused quite a considerable amount of damage to road surfaces throughout the ridings. A small washout occurred on the road giviug access to Mr Brown’s homestead, and i have made, the necessary arrangements to have repairs effected. I have also arranged to. have the whole length of the Ohingaiti-Pemberton and Peka roads trimmed by the No. 2 grader, as this work is very necessary, after the heavy rain. The Maugarere roar is at present in a fairly good condition, notwithstanding the unfavourable weather conditions. “Rangiwahia Riding.—The section of the No. 52 main highway has been kept in good condition by the grader plant, the roadman assisting with the forking

of the grass sods. The usual maintenance work has received atteutiou throughout the riding, aud an old culvert oh the No. 52 main highway has been renewed with 12-inch concrete pipes. The Whare road has been con siderably improved by the grader plant. The roadmen have assisted with the grading work as well as attending to other necessary road repairs, caused by the recent storms, and the removal oi slips, aud cleaning water tables on the Alania and Upper Titirangi roads. “ Hautapu Riding.—The whole section of the No. 52 main highway has received frequent attention from the grader plant, and is at present in a very satisfactory condition. The roadmen have attended to other necessary repair work on the length; also the usual maintenance w T ork and removing slips on the Kawhatau road. The road surfaces on this section are becoming very rough for want of repair metal. I engaged a carrier to deliver pot hole repair metal in tho Upper Kawhatau for a few days, and this has improve! certain sections but further metal re pairs are urgently necessary. I intend to have the grader working on this road during the current month, cutting out water channels and dressing road surfaces, as the roadmen are unable to cope with this work to advantage" Gensral Business. Wednesday was iixed as tlie statutory closing day for shops in the Kiwitea County. An additional charge of 10 per cent, is to be added to all rates for tho current year remaining unpaid after sth March, 1937. Airs E. N. Cheseldine was granted a renewal of the billiard saloon license in respect of premises situated at Kimbolton. Tho County overseer was instructed to preparo an estimate of tho recent storm damage in the Hautapu riding. An application is to be mado to tlie Public Works Department for a grant to cover the extraordinary damage to roads and culverts caused by storms during the last week-end. Accounts amounting to £lO4l 3s 8d were passed for payment.
