Dannevirke News
SHOPS TO CLOSE ON FRIDAY Owing to amended legislation, shop assistants in Dannevirke are now' working under an agreement of the Wellington district, and under the terms of the award the retailers' committee of the Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce at a meeting on Tuesday night decided that a close day be observed by the shops on Friday, and that the late night for the week he held to-night. Local butchers are governed by a Hawke 's Bay award, instead of a Wellington one, and there is no provision for a holiday on Wellington’s Anniversary Day. Butchers' shopfc, therefore, will be open as usual on Friday. Local bakers are to observe the same holiday as the retailers, closing all day on Friday and opening on Saturday morning. The statutory half-holiday on Saturday will be observed as usual by retailers, butchers and bakers alike. Confusion at Napier and Hastings. The holiday position is somewhat complicated at Napier and Hastings. Most of the shops in Hastings will be closed on Friday, but Napier shops will be open. Briefly, tho explanation is that places 15 or moro miles distant from the general post office, Wellington, may obtain permission to substitute some other holiday for that on Anniversary Day. Napier retailers have obtained this permission and will observe a holiday on people's day of the Hawke's Bay spring show. The Hastings Retailers' Association negotiated unsuccessfully, and consequently the shops must close on Friday.
