Britisher’s Steadier Game
UPSET BY MISTAKE WHEN LEADING IN VITAL SET United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Tuesday, 11.20 p.m. BOSTON, Jan. 19. .Vines won his third consecutive match against Perry, 6 —4, 2 —6, 6—3, 5—7, 7—5, squaring .the professional series three-all. Perry was the steadier throughout the five sets, making 97 errors against Vines' 110, but the American piled up 59 earned points against 39, most of which were terrific backhanders. Perry went for placements, while Vines’ smashing service was under control. In all but four of his service games he scored 13 aces. Perry after breaking through Vines service when the match point was against him in the tenth game of the fourth set won the next two and squared the match. He held his own until tho eleventh game in the final set when ho had a 30-love lead before he made a hairline shot which was ruled an ace. Perry thought it landed outside and he deliberately doublefaulted to bring the score 30 —15. The incident so upset Perry that Vines was able to score four more consecutive points for a lead of 6—5, whereupon he ran out the match on his own service. Vines and Barnes defeated Perry and Lott in the doubles which ended at the eleventh game when a post broke. The former team wou the first set 6—4, but were trailing love-ono in the second.
