AUTOMOBILE CLUB
MEETING OE COMMITTEE. 1 The monthly meeting of the committee of the Automobile Club was held on Monday evening. , Present: Messrs. N. H. Mackie (president, in the chair), E. E. B. Holben, 0. W. Ennis, E. S. Oliver, J. Mason, L. M. Justice and J, McLeod. Correspondence was read from the Wellington Automobile Club regarding convassing for members: from same' regarding the state of the main road through the Otaki Borough; from the Otaki Borough Council re“ same mat- j ter; from Pohangina County Council : re warning boards at a bend on Knight’s Hill (Pohangina) road, which it was decided to supply;! from Palmerston North Borough Coun- ■ cil and Kairanga County Council stating that instructions had been ; given to have the piece of road on ■ Foxton lino known as “no man’s ] land,” put in order forthwith. | Tho president reported that several! l matters complained of in the Horo- ! '• whenua County were to be 'put in ( order. j
The matter of lines inflicted by magistrates on joy riders and those i who converted cars not belonging to 1 them to their own use was discussed. It was considered that the punish ment inflicted was altogether inadequate for the nature of the offence 1 The question of the penalty dealt out to drunken drivers of cars, it was also thought, should be very much more severe considering the risk to life and limb caused by those “irresponsiblcs.” Between SO and 90 new members wore elected. ; The Kairanga County Council wrote intimating that it thought it had been made quite clear that until tho Highways Board was in a position to find tho subsidy promised the now Awapuni bridge could not be built The present structure, however, has just been again put in order. I
