SUCCESSFUL SWIMMING CAENIVAL. FIRST IN NEW BATHS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Foxton’s first swimming carnival, held on Saturday evening proved a great success, and was well patronised by the general public, every available seat was taken and dozens had to stand. Mr A. Campbell, president of the Manawatu centre, thanked the Foxton Blub for the invitations to bo present and congratulated the Foxton people oft having such an up-to-date' swimming bath, which he understood was all paid for. This was their first carnival and judging by the number of competitors and the support accorded ,by the public ■it would: bo a great success, and no doubt would be the forerunner of many more. It was a notable fact that Foxton had some really first class swimmers among whom was Harrison, the centre’s 100 yards champion. Next year the New Zealand championships would be held in Wellington, and they already had Harrison in view as their representative at that meeting. Other officials of the centre who took an active part in running the sports were Mr J. Fahey who. acj;'ed as-starter, and ,Mr Robbie as judge, while Mr Feeder acted as judge of the diving events. Walls. benefit concert. i On Thursday evening at the Town Hall a benefit concert for Jack Short (the boy who lost his eyesight through the explosion of a "dud” shell with [which he was playing on the sand hills) was given by the men of the .J 6th; Battery (Napier). »The con-j cert was well patronised and the items thoroughly appreciated, nearly every number being encored. Messrs D, R. Banon and G. F. Smith (local talent) and Misses Patterson,. Koore, and Pritchard, also, contributed to the entertainment The Mayor, Mr. M. E. Perreau. thanked the Battery for their practical sympathy in a deserving case and also the performers for the excellent entertainment provided. Captain A. E. Lawry 0.C., on behalf of the Battery, conveyed the parents their sympathy In the misfortune which had befallen their son and expressed the hopo that the boy’s pathway through life would be brightened in other ways to mitigate his affliction, Captain Lawry also took occasion to thank the citizens of Foxton 'for the hospitality extended to the Battery on this and other occasions. SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION. On Friday evening at the District, High School a social evening was given by the teaching staff and the committee to Miss Cloner, a member of the staff, prior to her departure to Wanganui East School, and Mr and Mrs., A. Alsop, who arc leaving shortly on a trip to England. Dancing, games, and musical Items contributed to a most enjoyable evening. Occasipn was taken to present the guests of. the evening with tokens of esteem. On behalf of the staff and committee, Mr. F. A. Mason (bead-master) presented Miss Clover with, a set of cut glass toilet articles. In doing so he referred to the excellent services rendered to the Beach-side School by Miss Clover, and wished, her success for the future. Miss Clover suitably acknowledged. Mr. J. K. Hornblow, (chairman of committee) on behalf of the committee, In asking Mr Alsop (Bcaoh-side School representative) to accept a .fouritain pen for himself and a pocklet cushion for Mrs. Alsop, referred to the good work, done for the side-school by Mr-Alsop. He wished Mr and Mrs. Alsop a pleasant trip and safe return. Mr M. E, Perreau also spoke I of the work done by both Mr and Mrs. Alsop to promote the welfare of the j children of the Beach. Mr Alsop in acknowledging the gbod ■ wishes and gifts, said both he and his [ wife found pleasure in any work which had for its object the welfare of the children. | The usual musical honours were given. Supper was dispensed by the ladies. The singing of "Auld Lang Syrie” brought a pleasant evening to a close.

TENNIS. A team from Levin Club visited Foxton on Saturday, the visitors winning the match by 16 sets to 8 and 160 games to 137. Following are the scores:— Men’s Singles. Dr Thompson 5, C.
