TROUBLE IN SAMOA
MORE DRASTIC PRECAUTIONS. I (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON .Last Night A Supplementary Gazette issued to-night contains a notice authorising the administrator of Western Samoa to prohibit the transmission or delivery of telegrams in the following oases:-* (1) Any telegram expressed in code unless such telegram is accompanied by a transcript thereof certified as correct to the satisfaction of the Administrator; (2) Which in the opinion of the Administrator contains matter of a treasonable . ■ seditious, libellous or grossly offensive character;; (3) Which in the opinion of the Administrator is intended or is likely to instigate the commission of any criminal offence. (4) Which in the opinion of the Administrator is intended to or may cans# any person in any way to prevent or hinder or attempt to prevent or hinder the due performance by the Government of New Zealand of its functions and duties in relation to Western Samoa, or is in the opinion of the Administrator in any way calculated to prevent or hinder the duo administration of the executive Government of the territory.
LABOUR’S ALLIES WEALTHY TRADERS. HR. HAWKEN’S CRITICISM: AUCKLAND, Last Night. Bon. O. J. Hawken delivered a speech at Papa too tor. to-night. Tho Minister criticised Labour’s attitude toward Samoa, stating that Labour was traditionally hostile to British methods of government! “ Like the Maori the Samoan is easily swayed,” said Mr. Hawkon, “ and only a firm hand will bring them out of their unrest. The attitude or* Labour toward the Samoan complex was just what might have been expected from past experiences, except in this ease Labour because it suited it had allied itself with the wealthy traders.” EX-SERVICEMEN’S SUPPORT. WESTPORT, Last Night. At the ex-service men’s dinner to Sir Charles Fergusson at Denniston a resolution was carried that a cable be sent to General Richardson, of Samoa, congratulating him on his stand and commiserating with him in his unenviable position duo to the Samoan unrest.
