MAY DISPEL BOGEY OF UNEMPLOYMENT

Price Improvements For Primary Products

A NOTE OF OPTIMISM STRUCK ("Times” Special.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. "Though the past year has not shown any great improvement generally we have a welcome indication of substantial improvements in the volume of production and in prices realized for our primary products. This, if sustained, should largely solve the problem of unemployment,” I This was the note of qualified optimism struck by A. G-. Lunn, president of the Chamber of Commerce, at the annual meeting to-day. "The degree of unemployment has been unparalleled for nearly 40 years,” he continued, ‘"an unusual feature being its persistence during the summer months.” Speaking ,of tho cost of living Mr. Lunn said that one of the causes was that the country had not yet recovered from post-war extravagance. From 1914 to 1926 local body taxation had increased 45 per cent, and the Government' 62 per cent. These serious increases affected tho cost of living as did also tho extravagance of present methods of living and the higher standard. Another factor was heavy freights on imported goods, especially when compared with Australian rates.
