They are smooth in action but extremely powerful, and retain their efficiency under all weather coaditiont. Air Cleaner On the 2.49 h.p., 3.49 h.p., 4.93 h.p. and 5.57 h.p. machines a centrifugal type of air cleaner can be fitted if required. This requires no attention and eliminates most of the dust present in the air supplied to the engine. On the twin cylinder models a very efficient felt air filter can be fitted if required. Cush Drive A cush drive of the spring-loaded cam face type is mounted on the engine mainshaft of all models except the 1.74 h.p. Any irregularities in the driving torque of the engine cause the driving member to recede from the sprocket against spring pressure and so rotate slightly without driving the sprocket w this ensures an extremely smooth drive. It is automatically lubricated by oil mist from the crankcase. Fork Links An important feature of B.S.A. Forks is the design of the links. Long spigots formed on the links enter the fork yokes and take the entire load on the forks. A greater bearing area is thus provided, and wear on link mechanism is considerably reduced. The space between the ends of the spigots acts as a reservoir for lubricant. Head Lug A particularly strong system of construction is now used for the front part of a B.S.A. frame. A single continuous head lug is employed, on which are formed sockets to take top tube, tank rail, and front down tube. An extension on this lug carries the upper front sidecar connection on 3.49 h.p. & larger models Oil Pump The mechanical pump sight feed is fitted to the timing cover and a bypass valve on the oil pump enables the front chain to be lubricated.
