CRAWFORD DEFEATS BRUGNON, PLAYING BRILLIANT TENNIS

SYDNEY, Feb. 22.’ At tennis the second series of tbt Prance v. Australia Tests concluded io fine weather on fast courts. Prance won the series by si* rubbers to three. A third scries will b« played 'at Melbourne, To-day'a matches resulted: — Crawford defeated Brugnon B—6, 6—4. In the first set the Australian was behind 5—2, playing badly, but recovered splendidly volleying well and serving phenomenally. The long set tired Brugnon more than Crawford, who except for a brief period played a brilliant all-round game. It waa Crawford’s best display during the carnival. ’ Borotra defeated Patterson 6-—4, 6—2. The visitor was more active making remarkable recoveries. In the first set Patterson was in good form, but faded away. His serving was fairly good, but he was weak in other phases of play. Borotra was right at the top of his form his side line drives being exceptionally accurate. His succesa made Prance five rubbers to three, . ensuring victory in the tests. The winners showed better combination. Otherwise there was little difference in the play. Patterson displayed much improvement on his previous efforts. Hopman returned finely, Brugnon was the better Frenchman. The contest provided some brilliant play. , ' Tuesday's play in the series resulted! J. Crawford (N.S.W.) defeated 0. Boussua (France) 6—3, 5—7, 6—4. The winner’s display was weak, his serv- j ing without sting, and unworthy of a Davis Cup representative. : The French- ' man fought well, but missed many easy 1 chances of scoring. Brugimn and Bnussus defeated G. L. Pa“erson and H. Hopman, 6—4, 6—4. Apart from powerful serves. Patterson was. below form, except at the start. Hopman was clover in serving, taking service splendidly. Brugnon was the star of the four, brilliantly serving mauy acos. Borotra defeated H. Hopman, 6—4, 6—4 The Frenchman displayed better cou-tcrsft. and was particularly good with smashes and cross-court volleys, - but the loser was not disgraced, participating in several fine rallies.
